There is always much to learn from history and in this project, it informed our design plan. When the building was constructed in 1892, it housed the first public high school on the South Shore of Long Island and had common features of its time such as transom windows and hardwood floors. Now used as a municipal building open to the public, we were mindful of specifying materials for high traffic areas. The porcelain floor tile with a wood look parquet design, calls back to those original hardwoods. We designed raised panels and added grids over the doors to the existing entry vestibule, to create a transom look. The commercial carpet brings color and appropriately patriotic theme. Vinyl wallcovering to protect the walls, new ADA compliant signage and a hanging system for the Mayors display all were chosen to enhance experience for employees and visitors.
